MATERIALS\nIN OUR SOCKS Every material we use in our socks has been carefully chosen and\ntested to meet our rigorous durability standards. We currently use natural and\nsynthetic fibers, and only 3 types of fiber per sock. As you’d expect, we are\nactively investigating and testing new fibers and yarn blends that do not\nappear in our current products. We’ve prioritized Merino wool throughout our\nproduct lines and our goal of producing the most responsibly made product is\nreflected in our commitment to the success of the Responsible Wool Standard.\nMERINO WOOL Merino wool is the most important and relied upon fiber in our\nproducts and accounted for 56% of our yarn consumption by weight last year.\nFor many years we’ve prioritized the use of Merino wool exclusively from sheep\nthat have not been exposed to the practice of mulesing. In early 2019 we made\na commitment to support the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) and shift 100% of\nour wool supply to RWS-certified Merino wool. RWS is a voluntary standard with\nstrict guidelines to protect animal welfare and adhere to progressive,\nsustainable farm and land management practices while maintaining traceability\nthroughout the entire supply chain. Although the market share for RWS is only\nestimated at ~1% of global wool production, the number of certified sources\nhas grown substantially over the last couple years. Today, 100% of the wool we\nprocure is RWS-certified. RECYCLED NYLON We use REPREVE, a nylon 6 fiber made\nfrom pre-consumer industrial waste that would otherwise be landfilled or\ndowncycled. Using REPREVE instead of virgin nylon allows us to offset the use\nof crude oil, benzene, cyclohexane, and other harmful hydrocarbons that are\ninvolved in the production of virgin fiber. In short, using recycled nylon\nconserves energy and water and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from\nmanufacturing. While we aim to reduce our use of virgin nylon in our products,\nrecycled nylon only accounted for 4% of our nylon consumption last year. We’re\nactively working with our suppliers to source more recycled nylon so we can\nincorporate it across our product lines. To date, nylons generated from pre-\nconsumer waste material have held up well against our durability requirements,\nbut we’d like to find an equally good source of post-consumer recycled nylon\nor yarns that blend both pre and post-consumer nylon. SPANDEX\/ELASTANE We use\nLycra to provide elasticity, strength, and form-fitting comfort. While spandex\naccounts for no more than 5% of the fiber used in our finished product, it\nrepresented 27% of the raw materials we procured last year. Like conventional\nnylon, spandex is derived from petroleum and has been important to the\nperformance of our products. Unfortunately, it’s the most difficult material\nin our fiber mix to replace with a recycled alternative. When it comes to\nsynthetics, we’re primarily focused on converting virgin nylon and polyester\nto recycled alternatives. However, we’re also looking for functional, recycled\nspandex alternatives. Our backyard is the perfect\ntesting ground to make the finest Premium All Weather Performance Socks. We\nski, snowboard, hike, bike and run in the most unforgiving climate in the\nlower 48. It is under these conditions that we design, test and manufacture\nour socks. STILL MADE IN VERMONT, USA After so many decades why do we still\nknit every pair of our socks here in Vermont? We don’t do it because it’s the\neasy thing to do—we do it because it’s the right thing to do. We do it because\nfor us, it’s the only way to do it. There are faster and cheaper alternatives\nbut nobody ever outsourced anything for quality. ONE FAMILY - We are family\nowned.
